Marathon County Health Assessment Grants
Local Funding Partnership Addresses Health Priorities
The Community Health Assessment for Marathon County has identified specific health care priorities that are being addressed by local action teams made up of individuals and organizations. The key priorities include alcohol use and misuse, health care for the elderly, obesity and related disorders, tobacco use and exposure, suicide prevention, the utilization of prenatal care, and concerns with the cost of health care.
A consortium of five local funding partners announce the availability of approximately $80,000 to be granted in 2009 toward projects and programs that address the key priorities identified in the 2006-2010 Marathon County Community Health Assessment. The funding partnership includes: Judd S. Alexander Foundation, Aspirus Health Foundation, Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin, Marshfield Clinic, and the Foundation of Saint Clare's Hospital.
Healthy Marathon County Grants Awarded / 2009
Alzheimer's Association of Greater Wisconsin: $7,244
Early Stage Detectioin and Support Group / This program will work to identify and establish ongoing professional relationships for a Memory Assessment Clinic and Support Groups for those diagnosed with Alzheimer's as well as family members, caregivers, medical professionals and community based organizations.
American Red Cross Marathon County Chapter: $13,310
Community Health Screenings / Promotion of health and wellness through regularly scheduled, free screenings for hypertension and diabetes. Program targets the elderly, underserved, Hmong, and Hispanic persons and offers individualized healthy lifestyle education.
Concerns About the Cost of Health Care (CATCH): $2,000
Public Informatin Forum / Funding for this program will support the organization and costs associated with a public information forum to be scheduled in the greater Wausau area after expected legislation regarding helath care reform is passed. The goal of this program is to create a more informed population to enable them to become more accountable for their healthcare decisions and related costs.
Faith in Action of Marathon County: $4,595
Medical Transportation for Elderly and Disabled Residents / Providing transportation to medical appointments for elderly or disabled residents. Grant funds will help recruit and train volunteers and provide educational materials to better serve rural areas of Marathon County.
Healthy Babies for Marathon County: $12,500
Treating Perinatal Depression through an In-Home Therapy Model / Women who are experienceing perinatal mood disorders or have an identified barrier to accessing outpatient therapy services, will be enrolled in one of Start Right's antepartum, postpartum, or family visiting services.
Marathon County Tobacco Free Coalition: $10,000
Smokeless Tobacco Education / A community program will educate youth, parents, and grandparents on new smokeless tobacco products and the dangers of using smokeless tobacco.
The Women's Community: $16,00
Safe and Sober / Through a collaborative partnership with North Central Health Care Center, funding will support a pilot project to address substance abuse issues for women who have been victims of domestic and/or suxual abuse.

Building Responsible Alcohol Values and Options (BRAVO) and the Marathon County Alcohol and Other Drugs Partnersihp Council: $10,200
Bravo for Youth! Preventing Underage Drinking-A Social Norms Campaign / Perceived use of alcohol is higher than actual use; since behavior follows perception, this social norms campaign is working to change perceptions of underage drinking and reduce alcohol consumption among teens.
Healthy Babies for Marathon County: $10,000
Back to Crib, Back to Sleep / Implementation of a local chapter of "Cribs for Kids," a program providing cribs for low-income families to help reduce the risk of injury and death of infants due to unsafe sleep environments.
Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Coalition: $28,500
Footprints to Health - Nutrition Program / Expansion of education and technical assistance on nutrition related issues to support entities that are not a part of the HEAL Footprints to Health program. Consultation to schools, foodservice operators, day care and worksite wellness committees.
Marathon County Tobacco Free Coalition: $6,000
Quit Tobacco Now / Community based, collaborative, comprehensive and cost-effective group concept adult tobacco treatment program in Marathon County aimed at increasing the number of individuals who successfully quit using tobacco.
Suicide Prevention Action Team: $10,00
Suicide Prevention / Reduction of suicides, identification of those at risk and raising awareness of risk factors through information, community awareness, and training.
